🍷 Emilio Bulfon — Piculìt Neri
What I'd tell a customer
“This is a really rare indigenous red grape from Friuli called Piculìt Neri. It's dark-fruited and savory—black cherry, wild berries, herbs and a little smoke—with bright acidity and some tannin. It's unusual, but very elegant.
What the maker says:
- 100% Piculìt Neri
-
Friuli-Venezia Giulia, specifically the western foothills around Pordenone
- Dry, still red
- Bright red color with violet reflections
- Herbaceous, wild berries, smoky and vanilla notes
- Dry, warm, fairly fresh, with noticeable tannin
-
The winery recommends it with meat and game. Bulfon
The grape itself produces surprisingly dark-fruited wines for a northern Italian native: blackcurrant, plum, cassis, cherry and raspberry show up in various descriptions. Bulfon's version is generally medium-bodied with good freshness and structure. Bat and Bottle
What it tastes like
Black cherry · wild berries · cassis · plum · herbs · smoke · vanilla · spice
There's also a really interesting eucalyptus/forest-floor quality that can come through, with sharp northern-Italian acidity and fine tannin. Flour + Water”
Mental shortcut:
🌲 “Friulian dark-fruited red — somewhere between cool-climate Syrah and a northern Italian native.”
